Great to see such strong support from Ontario’s legal community for Joint Letter sent today to Premier Doug Ford opposing invocation of Notwithstanding Clause to override fundamental rights of people experiencing homelessness and living in encampments 👇

🚨 BREAKING: We’re taking the Canadian government to court over Gaza. Yesterday, we filed a lawsuit accusing Canada of violating the Genocide Convention and our plaintiffs’ Charter rights. Learn more and donate here: https://t.co/5eUDfgL5LU
The statement of claim in el Batnigi and Jarada v. Attorney General of Canada, served yesterday on the Crown, is accessible here:

Canada failed to fulfill its duty to take all reasonable measures to prevent genocide in Gaza. It must be held accountable.
Even in the face of the fiercest disagreements, attacks such as those we have recently seen against the Special Rapporteur on the Occupied Palestinian Territory - where her safety, that of her family members and colleagues is threatened - are unacceptable.
As @volker_turk has said, aggressive verbal attacks, threats and reprisals against Special Procedures mandate holders must stop.
Just so we understand this correctly, our foreign minister has no issues meeting with the genocidal president of Israel Isaac Herzog (who declared "there are no innocent civilians in Gaza"), but refuses to meet with the UN special rapporteur @FranceskAlbs?
Absolutely shameful!
In a world gone mad, with human rights and int. law on the edge (and now Trump 2), it was inspiring to hear the compelling, compassionate and constructive comments of @FranceskAlbs@ArdiImseis and Nahla Abdo last night @uOttawa Thanks to uOttawa PSA and other organizers!
You know who @FranceskAlbs wasn't snubbed by? Hundreds of students, faculty, staff, and community members from Carleton & uO who came to listen to her and to Drs. Nahla Abdo and Ardi Imseis and the many more who watched online. Grateful to student organisers who made this happen.
This is ALARMING. Mayors are asking the Premier to override the right to life and to security of the person of homeless persons. These, along with the the right to housing, are cornerstone human rights upon which all other rights stem. That's what's at stake here. They want to be able to disappear homeless people.
And a reminder, Grants Pass is a SCOTUS decision and is irrelevant to Canada - a decision made by Trump appointed Judges.
I've been to encampments across the United States, I've met with mayors and city counselors across the United States. I've never seen such cruelty toward homeless people as I saw there.
Is this the direction this country wants to move in ?

Meir Ben Shabbat, Netanyahu's former National Security Advisor, outlines - one year after the October 23' hostility broke with Hamas's attack - the #Israeli "end game" in occupied #Palestinian territory:
In #Gaza, permanent Israeli military and civil control, with no Palestinian governance (Hamas or the Palestinian Authority).
In the #WestBank, a defeated Palestinian Authority, expanded Israeli settlements and entrenchment of annexation.
ALERT: This plan to forcibly transfer the remaining Palestinian inhabitants of northern #Gaza is now underway. Exactly one year after #Hamas invaded #Israel and committed atrocity crimes, the latter's actions are in grave breach of #IHL, and the norms of international law prohibiting the acquisition of territory.
@Darcy13Lindberg Thinking about this, I wonder if it was the local law association that filed the complaint. The police referred to ‘law association’, which @JoannaRuthBerry understandably thought was a reference to LSO … but maybe it was the Carleton County (aka Ottawa) Law Association …?
Sorry you experienced this @JoannaRuthBerry. Understandably upsetting and very disturbing. If true that @LawSocietyLSO is behind this, it’s appalling — esp. since, AFAIK, they did nothing about the benchers who sent the career threatening letter re: TMU students. #abuseofpower
