I think it’s very much tied to the psychology of war. If being first out of the foxhole or over the city walls meant certain death, why do it? To fail in that duty is cowardice and do do it enthusiastically is honor and glory.

So for this, each man goes in thinking he will be the one to suffer the most, yet overcome it to beat his competition and gain his glory in this small arena. But, the human body can take far less punishment than the human mind. Eventually, their bodies are simply overcome.
