I have never seen a judge order the release of a suspicious activity report (SAR) filed by a bank. These reports, which banks are legally required to send to FinCEN when they spot transactions that bear the hallmarks of money laundering or other financial misconduct, are exempt from FOIA and are protected from disclosure under the Bank Secrecy Act.
So the fact that these SARs have been unsealed in response to the NYT/WSJ intervention in the case is a very big deal
