Does lifting weights stunt kids’ growth? No.
Let’s settle this once and for all: Strength training with weights does not harm kids’ growth plates. It does not stunt height. It does not lower bone mineral density.
In fact, it does the opposite.
Strength training enhances bone formation and bone mineral density in kids. The improvement in bone quality seen during the teenage years has lasting benefits, helping to protect against bone issues later in life.
In short, strength training—and active play, especially activities that involve jumping and landing—helps kids develop stronger, healthier bodies now and in the future.
Yes, it’s important not to overdo it. Yes, training should be done under proper coaching to ensure correct form. But when done correctly, strength training is great for kids.
One of the more fascinating phenomena in lacrosse is kids/families going to absolute redline to get to the point of commitment then once they do completely stop working after the IG post & get their day in the sun.
The "commit & quit" effect is something I talk about college coaches a lot with. They are always disappointed to see guys hide from competition, kick their feet up or think they are now "too good" to work hard.
No one has ever been dropped from a school for being out there & having a bad game from time to time. It's apart of the growth process that gets your ready for your college experience where you will undoubtedly get humbled.
If you spend 2 years hiding from competition, more likely guys have a harder time bouncing back from humbling experiences in college than the guy who has his battle scars & has never stopped progressing forward.
Players & families alike think a committed athlete is like a nice Rolex, only to be brought out on fancy occasions when really a commitment it's much more like a hour glass. Every moment time is ticking away before the last spec of sand drops & you step on campus to be tested where there is no where to hide & time is based solely on merit.
