Selecting type sizes from a scale helps maintain good proportions because there are mathematic relationships between the size increments

Use only one type treatment when creating typographic emphasis (italic, weight, caps/small caps, size, color, underline, face)

Don’t use hyphen endings on consecutive lines.

Word space and letter space used effectively can fix rags

Fix widows and rags by adjusting type size, measure, word spacing, letter space (track or kern) or by forcing line breaks.

A type block is “too ragged” (rags) when the line lengths vary too much, creating uncomfortable rhythms on the ragged edge.

The larger the type size relative to the column width, the greater the likelihood of rivers

Full justify (justify both left and right) tends to create “rivers” (multi-line runs of white space) in blocks.
