@DrPhiltill The geologic evidence for the late heavy bombardment is weak… it’s a cool model, though, and could have happened in a different system. It just may not have happened here.
@razibkhan But Waymos own numbers show only a 9% safety improvement over rideshare drivers. The 90% number is compared to ALL drivers including teenagers and elderly and drunks etc, all of whom are removed from the rideshare pool.
@dilanesper You’re betraying where youre from. In NEC and Chicago it’s still overwhelmingly CBD-CBD. Thats why the shuttle isn’t really competitive with Acela for business travel.
Agree, that model no longer applies in TX and CA.
@SteveSeman How could a professor not benchmark to 30 year normals! Our ancestor’s difficult winter of aught-five is not relevant to whether this was a cold winter with respect to contemporary infrastructure and perception.
@PaulRoundy1@mattyglesias Sure, but even with a YIMBY’s dream of timeline, it wouldn’t be easy, cheap or quick to build new nuclear in NY state. The Summer reactor didn’t stall over NIMBY.
@PaulRoundy1@mattyglesias Yes but part of that is the closure of Indian Point and that - unlike most nuclear closures - was not an obviously bad decision. The seismic risk wasn’t recognized when it was built and they never would’ve put a plant there if they had known.
@maxtoscano1 That’s an extremely high dose of mercury, and not good for you. You should avoid eating that much swordfish in a sitting (that’s more than you should eat in an entire week).
@JamesSurowiecki Because people who have paid off their mortgage are disproportionately older, often retired, living on a fixed income, and forcing them to move from a home they’ve lived in for 30+ years is cruel. And reverse mortgages are expensive. Why doesn’t the state just defer the tax?
@VORTEXJeff They even show up on radar where the GS is close to the coast. And of course models strongly suggest that it’s happening. But it’s always bugged me that there aren’t records of it in the historical ship reports. If it’s as common as it should’ve been, why didn’t they see them?
@forecaster25@VORTEXJeff People from the mid Atlantic and southwest see a fall line when there is no fall line. To a hammer, everything is a nail.
The fall line isn’t relevant north of Trenton. Glacial geomorphology is different.
