Company A makes a pencil for 5 cents.
Middleman A buys it and sells it to Middleman B who sells it for 15 cents. Middleman C buys it and distributes it for 25 cents. Middleman D buys and sells Middleman A, B and C. Middleman E gets a cut of the buying and selling by Middleman D. Middleman F provides marketing for Middleman C. Middleman G provides legal services, etc.
Millions of dollars of "economics" happening between all of the middlemen.
Except in the US, Company A is in China.
