@jmitch I heard libraries in China have been doing "eink + ebook" for a while. not very polished though. they offer eink devices on loan for members (free or very cheap for residents), sometimes from vending machines. limited to a few cities, like Shanghai, Shenzhen.

The Chinese domestic market has many ultra-portable e-paper devices now, and there will be more to come. Most of them are crappy now but some are nicer.
