According to established Halo lore, Installation 04 aka Alpha Halo, had a diameter of approximately 10k km (6,213 miles). That’s roughly 80% the diameter of Earth, which sits at about 12,742 km.

Let that sink in for a moment.

The ring that Master Chief crash-landed on in Halo Combat Evolved wasn’t some small artificial structure floating in space. It was a colossal Forerunner megastructure containing entire oceans, mountain ranges, forests, deserts, rivers, weather systems, and countless facilities hidden beneath its surface.

The inner habitable surface of the ring stretched for tens of thousands of square kilometers, creating the illusion of an endless world curving upward into the sky. When Chief first stepped onto Alpha Halo in 2001, most players had no idea they were standing on one of the most ambitious pieces of science fiction worldbuilding ever created in gaming.

What’s even more incredible is that Installation 04 was only one ring in a network of seven Halo installations. Each one was designed as a galaxy-spanning superweapon capable of wiping out all sentient life within a radius of 25,000 light-years in order to starve the Flood.

Twenty-five years later, it’s still hard to comprehend just how massive Alpha Halo truly is. 🫡
