Chevonne Rusch was only two years old.

Two.

She should have been learning new words, running around, playing and discovering the world.

Instead, she was beaten to death.

A pathologist later told the court that Chevonne had 49 injuries and bruises across her tiny body. She died from severe bleeding on the brain after head trauma.

Her mother, Rochelle Botha, and Stefan van Niekerk were eventually convicted of her murder, along with a range of other serious offences involving children. Van Niekerk received life imprisonment for the murder, while Botha received 25 years for Chevonne’s murder. Botha’s application for leave to appeal was later refused.

We worked on this case closely during my time at Action Society.

And I still struggle with one simple fact:

Chevonne was two years old.

She could not call the police.

She could not leave.

She could not apply for a protection order.

She depended entirely on adults to notice what was happening and protect her.

They failed her.

When we talk about violence against children, never allow it to become just another statistic.

Remember Chevonne.

Remember 49 injuries on the body of a two-year-old child.

You see the poor pay for the corruption BBBEE enables the most. And South Africa's poor are disproportionately black citizens.

Just a few days after ANOTHER "Kill the Boer" rally, a 73-year-old woman, Mariette Mouton, was beaten to death inside her own home on Republic Street while her 81-year-old husband Cobus was metres away in the garden.

They walked in through the back door like they owned the place. Found an elderly grandmother alone in her house. Beat her to death with a blunt object. Stole her jewellery, electronics, a kitchen knife and garden tools, then left her husband to walk inside and find her body.

This is not a “robbery gone wrong.” This is the same pattern we see over and over; White pensioners targeted in their homes because they are White, old, and an easy target. Husband outside cutting grass. Wife inside. Door unlocked. Beaten until she was dead. No arrests.

Another White grandmother smashed to death in her own house while her husband was working in the garden. Another family shattered. Another “nothing to see here” from the usual crowd.
