I keep thinking about how traumatized my and my parents’ and grandparents’ generations were by the footage of the JFK shooting. I was very little but we all stood in front of our televisions when the recording was released and it still replays in my mind. I’m so sorrowful for the life lost at the rally and for the trauma of a crowd reacting to gunfire but I’m also profoundly grateful the bullet failed its full intention. For Trump and his loved ones’ sake certainly. But also because this generation would have taken that horrific sight to the grave.
These are such perilous times. My scripture reading this morning ended with the words of Jesus,
“In this world you will have trouble.”
Lord Jesus, we’re having trouble down here. Trouble heaped upon trouble!
“but take heart!”
Jesus, sometimes it feels like we have lost our hearts entirely. Help us find them again. Hate has overwhelmed us. Unstopped, this violence will destroy us.
“I have overcome the world.”
You and you alone. You, Jesus. There is only you. Overcomer, come quickly.

As schools weigh 4-Day weeks, research often overlooks their most pressing questions. A great resource for folks looking at the 4-Day school week from the University of Oregon---a searchable database of over 100 4-Day week studies. @MASALeaders@nrea1 https://t.co/8Mo49ZMmdS
At the conclusion of today's State Board of Education meeting, Dr. Karla Eslinger officially assumed the role as Commissioner of Education. Dr. Margie Vandeven will continue working alongside Commissioner Eslinger through the end of the month.

We forget the basics of teaching---one basic is that "reading aloud" has a stronger educational impact than "reading silently." Here's a great article that gives us a reminder that hearing yourself read is a powerful learning tool 👉 https://t.co/hZL37KDi9O @MSTA@MissouriNEA
Eighty-six percent of U.S. K-12 public schools reported challenges hiring teachers for the 2023-24 school year, with 83 percent reporting trouble hiring for non-teacher positions, such as classroom aides, transportation staff, and mental health professionals. https://t.co/E94p1PqURS
I am glad some districts are working on teacher shortage by offering bonuses, increase starting salary etc for new teachers, but please don't forget the amazing veterans already on staff, or there won't be enough people to hire regardless of what is offered.
Teachers at all levels will find a strategy or two to check for understanding. I was aware of several of these, but many were new to me. From movement to social media to creating comics, there was something for everyone.

MO House votes to expand school vouchers, which sends money to corporate schools with no voter oversight. It sets minimum teacher salary $10,000 less than Arkansas. All but 3 Dems voted NO. Thanks to 24 Republicans, under tremendous pressure, that also supported public schools. @MASALeaders@MOASSP@MoAESP@moasbo@MSTA@MissouriNEA
@RoblynHatch We filed an extension so we can save enough money to pay what we are gonna owe. My husband is disabled and I am a public school educator. So frustrating
As a teacher, my wellbeing is not dependent upon being given cakes in the staff room.
It is dependent on being supported, valued and included.
It is dependent on being able to work and have a life.
