A year after a brutal assault at Israel’s Sde Teiman detention site, five Israeli reservists accused of torturing and raping a Palestinian detainee still haven’t faced trial. On Monday, a senior military judge proposed mediation — a process that could result in a quiet plea deal without public testimony or accountability.

➤ Military Judge Col. Meir Wegiser suggested the defendants and prosecutors avoid trial and instead enter a “mediation” process, citing delays and the burden on the accused.
“I understand the difficulty the defendants are facing due to the length of the process.”

➤ The military prosecution agreed to mediation, but defense lawyers say they won’t consider it until they receive more investigative material. Trial proceedings have also been delayed by an investigation into a leaked video of the assault.

➤ The court has barred publication of the soldiers’ names. The victim’s identity is also unknown.
