What if the wars tearing the world apart are revealing a much deeper problem, one that weapons alone can never fix?

Pope Leo XIV gave a powerful warning on August 20 ahead of the World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation on September 1

“The wounds of war and the degradation of the earth … are profoundly linked to the condition of the human heart.”

“When the heart is distorted, relationships suffer, and the structures we build begin to reflect that disorder.”

War does far more than destroy cities. It takes lives, tears families apart, forces millions from their homes, and leaves wounds that can last for generations.

But Pope Leo says the problem goes deeper than politics. War is also a moral and spiritual failure. Changing laws or systems will never be enough if the human heart stays the same.

This year’s theme comes from Isaiah 2:4: “They shall beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks.”

“The prophetic call to ‘beat swords into plowshares’ is therefore not only a vision for nations, but a call to each person.”

That is where this becomes personal. The same things that fuel conflict on a large scale can also begin in us: pride, the desire to control, indifference, injustice, and the misuse of freedom and power.

That is why Pope Leo says we need conversion. We need to return to God and let His grace heal what is disordered in us.

“Without this inner transformation, peace will remain fragile and short-lived.”

We keep asking when the world will finally know peace.

Maybe the harder question is whether we are willing to let God change our own hearts first.
