Melaka Hospital: iFOBT screening halted, 50% cut in elective surgeries mulled, patient admissions predicted to triple

Melaka’s general hospital is expected to lose 9-10 medical officers per department due to relocations; the medical department alone is expected to see 20 MOs leave.

“What usually happens during placements is we have medical officers leaving and other medical officers coming in,” says a surgeon at Melaka Hospital. “This time, no one is coming in.”

Melaka Hospital has already temporarily halted its iFOBT colorectal cancer screening service.

The general hospital is also considering cutting elective surgical services by half. Patients are already facing waiting times of 2.5 to 3 months for certain surgeries, says the surgeon.

Until trained manpower comes in, cancer patients will be put on the semi-emergency list so that surgery can be performed whenever an emergency slot opens up. Doctors at Melaka Hospital are considering outsourcing patients to private hospitals – if they can get the budget.

Patient admissions are anticipated to triple due to the impending shortage of trained MOs, coupled with a reduction in services and deferred treatments. In cases like gallstones, for example, patients can develop complications if the stones aren’t taken out due to limited elective surgeries. These patients may then be forced to go back to the emergency department.

“The emergency traffic will start to increase. Patients will come in and clog the system, leading to admissions and emergency surgeries, which is unfavourable for both patients and the health care system.”
