I was hired as an analyst.
3 weeks later I was live scouting in League One.
No scouting experience. Few qualifications. Just a notebook and the hope I didn't look completely lost.
Here's what recruitment looks like at most clubs:
Monday: Build a player rating model for Centre Backs
Tuesday: Watch live match in person to assess a target
Wednesday: Create telestration video report on player
Thursday: Present data pack to the head coach
Friday: Logistics for Saturday game and prep work
That's one person. Not five different roles.
Small teams can't afford specialists. They need someone who can do the full process.
I had zero scouting experience when I got into the game. Within weeks I was traveling to matches.
But the advantage of being a generalist is that you're getting experience across the whole process.
And having an impact.
At small teams pure data people can struggle with softer skills and game knowledge.
Scouts who don't understand the data process can get left behind as they're unaware of how players are filtered.
The line between the roles is gone.
You're either comfortable working across both or you're limiting your options.
Especially earlier in your career.
Learn the data. Learn to scout. Learn to translate between the two.
That's what gets you hired.

🚨Jimmy Thelin Sacked!
Aberdeen manager Jimmy Thelin has been sacked accoring to multiple sources.
It comes after a poor run in form, with The Dons sitting 8th in the table.
Thoughts Aberdeen fans?
Not a glamorous choice I bet, but for me John McGlynn would be a smart choice for the next Aberdeen manager. Proven experience in Scottish football ✅
Organised, disciplined teams ⚽
Excellent at developing players 🔴
Exactly what we need right now 👊

What would you add? 👇
I’m actually surprised at how much money Jimmy Thelin has spent on players since taking over at Aberdeen €5.05m Didn’t expect the total to be that high! 🔴⚪💰 #AberdeenFC#TheDons#SPFL
