One of The Godfather‘s most revealing deleted scenes is Vito Corleone’s visit to his dying friend, Genco Abbandando.

Genco begs Vito to use his influence to keep death away, showing how completely the Don’s reputation had eclipsed the man himself. In that moment, Vito is forced to confront the one authority that can never be negotiated with.

This scene also does well to highlight how Michael initially wanted no part of it all.
