Can’t Eat Compliments

@PolitlcsUK She’s losing the plot a little these last two weeks. This creates some weird incentives and absolutely pumps the housing market - why wouldn’t you upsize for your final years if can use it as an IHT vehicle, esp with the promise to cut stamp duty

@KitPeacock 100%. In addition to the explicit cost of them not earning more and paying tax on that.

[Can’t Eat Compliments @Eat1729]

@Steven_Swinford @bbclaurak Problem is it’s just not credible. By backing this, it leaves me unable to trust they can run the numbers for a growth policy, or building effective tax policy. Delirious.

[Can’t Eat Compliments @Eat1729]

@mindofprospect @PerilPending When you say interest cancelled, I assume you mean in excess of inflation?

[Can’t Eat Compliments @Eat1729]

@IainDale It’s an incentive problem. Telling the most productive in society to stop at 99k means they cut hours/don’t take extra pay. That means less production, less economic activity and less tax take. Terrible for everyone - we want more of these people!

[Can’t Eat Compliments @Eat1729]

@Sonny496 @IainDale This is correct. It is not a justice thing, it is an incentives thing. Wrong incentives give the wrong outcome.

[Can’t Eat Compliments @Eat1729]

@NeilClark66 If it’s a contract, why did you not complain when it was amended with the addition of the triple lock?

[Can’t Eat Compliments @Eat1729]

@mickyd54 And we are happy to do so. Not every generation is about maximising their own outcome at the expense of everyone else.

[Can’t Eat Compliments @Eat1729]

@SniperRais @NJM71 Ah yes. That won’t drive people away from saving for their own futures and easing state dependence.

[Can’t Eat Compliments @Eat1729]

@Jeremy_Hunt Could you tell your party please?

[Can’t Eat Compliments @Eat1729]

@Natasha002 @JoannaBlythman Try paying for it

[Can’t Eat Compliments @Eat1729]

@Conservatives You will lose me if you choose to die on this hill. We all know the triple lock is a bung, increases above growth are not sustainable. You are just starting to get the electorate back - don’t screw this up.

[Can’t Eat Compliments @Eat1729]

@axiochrono Perhaps Michael Sheen could front a nice little infomercial that you’re required to watch before collecting your first payment.

[Can’t Eat Compliments @Eat1729]

@EstherMcVey1 It’s a speech, not a technical paper. We get the gist and have three years to firm it up before we vote on it. Hardly the worst thing I’ve seen from government!

[Can’t Eat Compliments @Eat1729]

@tomhfh You often get inflation in year 1 and then earnings the following year, with the wage round. That system would capture two hikes for a single price shock.

[Can’t Eat Compliments @Eat1729]

@AlanPavelin @ScotlandTheGr8 @snowleopardess Or, generally, childcare costs.

[Can’t Eat Compliments @Eat1729]

@andrew_lilico Good legislation for its time. Just needed one extra line to time limit it…

[Can’t Eat Compliments @Eat1729]

@TrilbeeReviews We tax extremely progressively by international standards. The lowest taxed group are low earners, in absolute and relative terms. Conclusion - if you want more benefits, higher taxes on median earners and below.
