Smartphones are one of the rare inventions that severely compressed the distance between how the poor and the rich experience the world.

For most of human history that distance was unbridgeable because the poor had no way to imagine what existed beyond their immediate environment while the rich had access to the full spread of the world.

When a phone connected to the internet landed in every hand, the poor gained a window into a world they were never allowed to see.
