This is a great initiative and temporary solution to one of the most difficult problem to solve. Can we partner together in Zimbabwe to launch the same initiative and sheltersuit shelterbags?
All Rough Sleepers in Chester to be given new Sheltersuit UK Emergency Shelterbags from Share’s Homeless Action Centre (SHAC).
In a significant step to support Chester’s homeless community, SHARE has partnered with Sheltersuit UK to provide brand-new Shelterbags to everyone currently sleeping rough. Funded entirely through sales at ShareShop Chester (30 Pepper Street), this initiative ensures that those without shelter have emergency protection against the elements.
The Shelterbags will be distributed at SHARE’s Homeless Action Centre (SHAC), where people experiencing homelessness can access support for addiction, employment, and housing. While SHAC focuses on long-term solutions, some individuals fall through the gaps in local authority support, specifically those with no local connection, or people who are waiting for accommodation to come available. For them, a Shelterbag offers a vital safety net, providing warmth, comfort, and dignity.
What is a Shelterbag?
Developed by Sheltersuit UK, the Shelterbag is a portable, waterproof, insulated sleeping system designed for rough sleepers. It includes:
• A built-in mattress for warmth.
• A weatherproof outer layer for protection.
• A built-in hood and storage space for personal belongings.
• A lightweight, easy-to-carry design.
While not a long-term solution, it prevents exposure-related illness and provides a stepping stone towards recovery.
A Word from SHARE and Sheltersuit UK
Adam Dandy, a Founder and Chairman of SHARE, said:
“Whilst our primary aim is to help people break free from rough sleeping and homelessness, we cannot ignore the fact that between 20 to 30 people still remain on the streets of Chester each night. Shelterbags provide immediate protection for those who have nowhere else to turn.”
Ian Sutherland McCook FRSA RIBA RIAS, CEO of Sheltersuit UK, added:
“Constant cold, wet, and lack of sleep destroy the immune system and cognitive function, making communication and recovery even harder. With a Shelterbag, you can sleep warm and dry, your immune system starts to repair, and you can begin to rebuild your life. This is more than a sticking plaster, it’s a bridge back to society. Sheltersuit UK is proud to support SHARE in this vital initiative.”
Beyond Shelterbags – The ‘Sponsor a Bed’ Appeal
Working with local hotels to utilise empty rooms at discounted rates, SHARE’s ‘Sponsor a Bed’ appeal allows people to fund hotel stays for people sleeping rough, giving them a break away from the streets inside a warm hotel room, and time to recover. You can Sponsor a bed here: https://t.co/5B7OnxTiqu

This morning, while taking a walk in Harare Gardens Park as part of my routine exercises and reflections, I met Precious Masukume, a man with a vision and a dream to see his words in print and to share his knowledge with a wider audience. He sat on the bench, holding a placard and carrying two manuscripts, each page filled with ideas and aspirations that he had poured his heart into. Yet, like so many gifted individuals, he lacks the financial means to do so.
I was moved by his determination and resilience. His willingness to go out there, humbly asking for support, shows a passion that deserves to be encouraged. Today, I am sharing his story and his appeal with you all, hoping that within our network, there might be someone who can help him realize his dream.
If you or anyone you know can assist with publishing-related services like editing, artwork, printing, marketing, distribution or can offer guidance, please reach out directly to him on +263783256787 or get in touch with me on +263772571342. Let’s help amplify voices like his, reminding each other that we rise by lifting others. Every bit of support, whether it’s a connection, advice, or simply sharing this post, brings him one step closer to his goal.
