Even as Ramstein Flag continues at full scale, NATO Allied air forces remain ready to respond to real-world events at a moment's notice. Portuguese 🇵🇹 F-16s and French 🇫🇷 Rafale fighters were scrambled on separate occasions as part of NATO Air Policing missions over the Baltic region.

Just before the weekend, @fap_pt F-16s conducted an interception to identify and monitor Russian 🇷🇺 aircraft operating near Baltic airspace, contributing to the security and surveillance of NATO's eastern flank.

At the start of this week, @Armee_de_lair Rafales intercepted and identified an uncrewed aerial system (UAS) crossing into Latvian airspace from the east. Following identification and in accordance with established procedures, the drone was engaged and destroyed. The aircraft subsequently conducted an additional surveillance mission along the eastern border of the Baltic states.

These missions highlight the readiness and vigilance of NATO Air Policing forces, demonstrating the Alliance's ability to train, deter and defend simultaneously.

Allied astronauts meet during Ramstein Flag 2026 👨‍🚀

Swedish astronaut 🇸🇪 and fighter pilot Marcus Wandt met French 🇫🇷 fighter pilot and AWACS commander Arnaud Prost during Ramstein Flag 2026.

Prost is scheduled to take part in a space mission in 2027. For many years, Wandt served at Norrbotten Wing and Kallax Air Base, where he built his career as a fighter pilot before becoming an astronaut and test pilot.

Ramstein Flag 2026 brings together Allied air forces to strengthen interoperability, enhance readiness, and reinforce NATO's collective defence across the Alliance.

Enkele nieuwtjes:

1/ Ons fregat Leopold 1 vertrok gisteren voor een maandenlange operatie in het Noorden van de Atlantische Oceaan. Deze operatie past binnen een grotere NAVO opdracht. Fair winds and following seas gewenst aan de bemanning.

2/ Gisteren organiseerden we voor het eerst een Defensie-Attaché dag in het Kasteel van Ham. Wist je dat onze krijgsmacht tientallen militaire diplomaten telt? Van Zuid-Afrika tot Noorwegen is onze Defensie vertegenwoordigd met Defensie-attachés. Toch gebruiken we hen nog te weinig als instrument van ons buitenlands beleid. Daar komt verandering in met een echte Defensiediplomatiestrategie. Meer nieuws volgt. We openen alvast extra posten in India, Japan en Finland.

3/ Ik gaf gisteren in Tubeke mijn laatste lezing van de Theo Toert voor de werkgeversorganisaties VOKA en AKT (Waalse VOKA). Acht provincies met volle zalen ondernemers die interesse tonen om te investeren en/of ondernemen in onze defensie/weerbaarheid. Groot succes! Dank aan de organisatoren.
