I never thought I’d own an eReader, never even considered it, really. But lately, space has become a real issue 🤣. So, hesitantly, I took the plunge and bought a Kindle. I’m a little nervous about the switch, but curious to see how it goes.
Most leaders think "hire great people and get out of their way" is good advice...
But Yvon Chouinard nails what it really means:
"Hire self-motivated, intelligent people who know their job, and then leave them alone."
At Classy, we took this lesson the wrong way.
Here's how most founders misinterpret this statement:
- They hire average people and micromanage them
- Or they hire great people and completely abandon them
Neither approach works.
The secret is finding people who are "so independent they're unemployable anywhere else" (Yvon's words, not mine)
That means:
👉 Giving them crystal clear direction
👉 Creating simple guardrails
👉 Letting them solve problems their way
👉 Holding them accountable to results
"Leaving them alone" doesn't mean becoming hands-off completely.
It means providing the right checkpoints so they can operate autonomously while maintaining high standards.
When you find these rare individuals who can self-manage and drive results, do whatever it takes to keep them.
They're worth 10x a normal employee.
