Servant leadership isn’t easy. You’ll face pressure from people who only care about your record, parents who think they know the answer, and athletes who test whether you mean what you say. There are moments when you must make unpopular decisions for the good of the team.
The principles that work in athletics is putting people first, removing barriers, and empowering others to succeed. Our student-athletes need to learn that leadership isn’t about being the star player, it’s about using your position, whatever it is, to help others succeed.
Leaders ask better questions instead of having all the answers. The best leaders create a culture where it’s safe to fail, learn, and try again. Leadership is about progress, not perfection.
Authenticity is the daily practice that makes great leadership possible. It requires the courage to show up as your true self, even when it feels uncertain. When leaders embrace authenticity, they create environments where trust flourishes.
Today, we celebrate excellence.
