It is quite common in children.

What is an umbilical hernia?
Umbilical hernia means a hernia in the umbilicus area (the area called the navel). It is a weakness in that area that is causing the protrusion of internal organs like the intestines.

Are umbilical hernias dangerous?
Umbilical hernias are mostly painless, harmless, not dangerous and can be left alone as long as it doesn’t bother the child. However if it gets too big, becomes painful, looks unsightly, affects the child’s self esteem or opens up the child to bullying, then the hernia needs treatment.

How do umbilical hernias happen?
The umbilical hernia develops from remnant area where the umbilical cord used to be - the cord that connected the unborn baby to the mother in the womb. The cord gets cut after birth and sometimes the area becomes weak and a hernia develops.

What is the treatment for umbilical hernia?
The only permanent treatment to an umbilical hernia is an operation/surgery. Pls take the child to see a pediatric surgeon to discuss this. You can go to any reputable licensed public/private hospital to arrange an appointment to see a surgeon.

Can an umbilical hernia be dangerous?
However there is one particular emergency I should warn about: If the hernia suddenly becomes very painful, very hard, the child vomits, or the child is in severe distress, pls go straight to the emergency department in hospital, that is a “strangulated hernia” it is a life threatening emergency.
