@Somervillennial I also had some sunflowers growing from seed along the bike path but then they mowed over them.

@Somervillennial I have tried this and you really need soil. A neighbor filled a tree bed with soil and built a box around the section (soil was a bit deeper). We had wildflowers growing last year and this year poppies. Then DPW had to do a sidewalk/tree repair and ripped out the flowers growing.
