This may be the image that defines America's 250th birthday.

They covered their faces.

She didn't.

Earlier in the day, Patriot Front marched through the nation's capital carrying Confederate flags and chanting that America must be "reclaimed," the latest expression of a white nationalist movement that has grown increasingly visible, violent, emboldened, and politically influential in recent years.

Their ideology is explicit.

Their courage, apparently, is not.

Not one of them was willing to show his face.

And then there is her.

No mask. No uniform. No fear.

Just an American woman refusing to surrender an inch of her dignity to a group of men who appeared to be seeking exactly that.

The symbolism is almost too perfect.

250 years after the Declaration of Independence, and six decades after Americans marched and died to make its promises apply to everyone, a group of masked white nationalists rode the socialist Metro home in anonymity.

The woman they tried to intimidate is the one America will remember.

The people who hide their faces do not define this country.

The people who refuse to be afraid do.

Mohammed Hashim, two years old. Myanmar. His father Mohammed Taher held him as he died of malnutrition. The food rations stopped when USAID was cut. "I lost my son because of the funding cuts," his father said.

Shahnaz and her newborn baby girl. Afghanistan. She died delivering on the side of a dirt road after the USAID clinic was closed. The baby died shortly after. Abdul covered the baby's grave in thorns to stop animals digging it up.

Joseph, Gift, and Alumbwe. Seventeen, fifteen, and twelve years old. Zambia. They lost both parents to AIDS when antiretroviral supplies ended. Joseph dropped out of school to care for his brothers. They sleep on a shared mat. They eat once a day. Joseph wants to be a doctor.

Mockler: Trump is the most corrupt president in American history. He leveraged the hype of his inauguration to announce a cryptocurrency named Trump coin. But that wasn't enough because then he announced Melania coin. But that wasn't enough, because then he created this pardon economy where people can pay into his campaigns or his family and they get directly pardoned.
