"Extinction of experience" in areas like ecology & paleobiology isn't just about fieldwork. It's also loss of taxonomic expertise. Any focus on Big Data, divorced from knowledge of natural history, is a largely vacuous enterprise w/ limited capacity to generate meaningful insight
It feels appropriate to retweet this, and even more so considering that in the university in which I did my undergrad there is pressure to eliminate field trips in biology and similar degrees…
An important article about the decline of Fieldwork-based research and education in ecology.

My colleagues have just finished a decade-long project to write this gorgeous monograph (free to read online!) on testate amoebae of the family Hyalospheniidae 🦠📖🥳

Last week, I had the amazing opportunity to spend an afternoon working at the herbarium of Naturalis Biodiversity Center. It’s such a shame I couldn’t stay longer to explore the museum—I guess I’ll have to return to Leiden someday!😜
📣 Our series of free practical webinars "Cutting vEdge Tools" is back for a festive session focusing on different facets of vegetation and biodiversity data!

🌍🌱 It’s often believed that plant communities with greater phylogenetic diversity also have higher functional diversity. In other words, the more evolutionary lineages present, the greater the range of traits. But is this always true?
🌿 In our Preslia article last year, led by Martin Večeřa and Zdeňka Lososová, we discovered that in European grasslands, these two measures of diversity are often decoupled. Now, in our latest study led by Georg Hähn, published in Nature Ecology & Evolution, we expanded the scope to a global scale using 1.8 million vegetation plots from the sPlot database.
🌿 The results were unexpected and challenged conventional wisdom: globally, plant communities with high phylogenetic diversity often have low functional diversity.

Not terrified by this graph?
That’s because you’ve been deliberately confused & distracted by inanity, culture wars & conspiracy theories spread by a media & politics in the pocket of psychotic billionaires who are gutting our society & our futures for grotesque personal profit.
Agreed! That's why I wrote ggpubfigs, a ggplot2 extension that *only colorblind-friendly color palettes.

"As pressures increase and the risk of Earth's climate system switching to a catastrophic state rises, more and more scientists have begun to research the possibility of societal collapse."
😬 Read that twice!
WikiProject Protista is the newest project in the biology-related side of @Wikipedia. We collaborate in creating & editing articles for protists 🦠, which are all eukaryotes except animals 🐀, plants 🌿 and fungi 🍄. Any help is welcome! https://t.co/YYGNTrkXAg
