On this day, March 24, 1853, Mary Ann Shadd (later Cary) launched the Provincial Freeman in Windsor, becoming the first Canadian woman and first African North American woman to publish and edit a newspaper. Local events to celebrate this date and her 200th birthday have begun!
#OTD in 1853 the 1st issue of The Provincial Freeman was printed in Windsor. It moved to Toronto in 1854 then Chatham (1855). #DYK It had multiple editors including William P. Newman, H. Ford Douglass & Isaac Shadd, but Mary Ann Shadd was the driving force behind the newspaper.
At today's event we'll be joined by the artists as well as by descendants of some of the historical figures depicted on the new murals located at 920 Mercer and 400 Erie Street East. (Pictured here: mural honouring Fred Thomas, by Ed Irmen.) #BlackHistoryMonth
We are proud recipients of a Government of Canada investment through the Tourism Relief Fund. Thank you to @FedDevOntario and @OntSouthwest for supporting local tourism. Today at 1 p.m. we'll reveal three new murals celebrating Black history in the McDougall Street Corridor.
