This narrative does not reflect reality; it feeds prejudice and selective blindness. What happened is not “Turks being unable to tolerate a meme,” but the political and social reaction to a deliberate provocation stripped of its context. Dismissing it with the label “insecure nationalism” is a conscious attempt to trivialize the issue.
Let’s dismantle the claims one by one.
First false claim:
“This was just an innocent meme.”
No, it wasn’t. Placing the elected president of a country next to a leader who is actively associated with arrest, coups, and regime-change narratives especially when done by a commentator from a country carrying deep historical and contemporary tensions with Turkey is not harmless humor. If similar imagery were used in the West—linking a German leader to Nazi visuals or an American president to lynching imagery—the “just satire” defense would not hold.
Second distortion:
“Turks equate Erdoğan with the state itself.”
They do not. A significant portion of those reacting are openly anti-Erdoğan, yet their position is clear: “We may oppose him politically, but we will not remain silent when a foreign actor particularly from a historically contentious neighbor publicly humiliates Turkey’s president.”
This is not personal loyalty. It is a sovereignty reflex. The same instinct appears in France when Macron is targeted, in Greece when its prime minister is mocked externally, or in the U.S. when a sitting president is attacked from abroad.
Third misrepresentation:
“Turks mock Greek historical suffering but can’t handle criticism.”
This generalization is both morally flawed and factually dishonest. Assigning the actions of fringe social media accounts to 85 million people is not analysis; it is intellectual laziness. By that same logic, should we attribute the open racism, calls to “throw Turks into the sea,” and the romanticization of 1821–1922 violence seen in Greek social media to all Greeks?
Fourth and most critical point:
Threatening language is unacceptable, but it cannot be weaponized selectively.
Yes, death threats and sexual violence threats are crimes and must be condemned without hesitation. But highlighting them to erase the original provocation and then labeling an entire society as “violent, primitive, or fragile” is not good faith criticism. Unless the same standard is applied to hate speech coming from the other side, such arguments lack credibility.
The conclusion is clear:
This is not a lesson in democracy; it is an exposure of double standards.
If humiliation coming from your side is branded as “humor,” while outrage from the other side is immediately called “fascism,” the problem is not Turkish society it is your moral compass. Satire punches up when it challenges power; it becomes provocation when it turns into a tool of targeting amid unresolved historical animosities.
This is not about being unable to laugh.
It is about knowing the line between respect and deliberate insult.
