@rochellehd It helps to make it easy. Ask well ahead of the deadline. Provide detailed info and instructions. Send any application materials you can (esp. pers. essays and CVs). I’ve written draft letters for recommenders to fill out.

@ShanKothari I disagree with that premise. Shading (including self-shading) is a major carbon constraint. Arid conditions also limit carbon acquisition, since opening stomata means losing water. And acquiring other nutrients entails a high carbon cost from roots, exudates, and etc.
