Ever heard of the Northrop N-205? In the late 1950s Space Race frenzy, Northrop wanted to turn their brand-new T-38 Talon supersonic trainer into a rocket-powered "space trainer"!
Vertical launch from a rail, triple rocket engines (H₂O₂ + JP-5), Mach 3.2, and altitudes up to ~200,000 ft (edging into space), all to prep pilots for X-15-style flights. 🚀✈️
Only ~25% airframe mods needed. Wild, right?
Sticking to the T-38, the T-38 Talon is nicknamed the “White Rocket” because of its sleek white paint and blistering performance. Despite being a trainer, it can climb faster than many front-line fighters of its era, hitting over 30,000 feet per minute when lightly loaded.
Not bad for a jet whose job is basically “teach people not to crash.” 🚀
Today we begin our dive into the F-5 variants with the legendary T-38 Talon!
The Northrop T-38 Talon was the world’s first supersonic jet trainer, and it’s still in service more than 60 years later. Even wilder, NASA uses T-38s as astronaut proficiency jets, meaning many astronauts fly a 1960s-era trainer to stay sharp before heading to space.

On this day in 1964, the Boeing 727 first entered service with Eastern Airlines! This versatile trijet would go on to become one of the most successful commercial aircraft ever built, with over 1,800 produced.
@DjsAviation Boeing used to have the manufacturing capacity to do so during WW2, but in this day in age they would really need to step up their game. Hopefully without cutting corners!
