The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission urges residents to lower their water heaters to 120 degrees Fahrenheit. This prevents scalding and conserves energy. Typically 120 degrees is indicated by a triangle, or HOT on the water heater temperature gauge. #EnergyTipTuesday

Exposed duct work often has unsealed seams and joints in unfinished basements or attics. These gaps let conditioned air leak out into unconditioned spaces. Use Underwriters Laboratory HVAC foil tape, or mastic duct sealant on every seam and corner you can see. #EnergyTipTuesday

Most attic accesses are not well sealed. An easy way to air-seal your attic entrances is to attach foam weather stripping on the edge of the hatch or door frame so the door or attic panel closes on top of the weather-stripping, creating an air seal. #EnergyTipTuesday

To maintain comfort, the heat lost in the winter must be replaced by your heating system and the heat gained in the summer must be removed by your cooling system. Properly insulating your home will decrease this heat flow by providing an effective resistance to the flow of heat.
