The extraordinary wildfire outbreak across Oregon, eastern Washington, and southern British Columbia has become even more alarming amid critical fire weather conditions. Over 500,000 acres have already burned in OR & WA alone, and that number could be >1 million acres by Mon.

Confidence is increasing in a severe, long-duration heatwave across the Southwest, expanding into California next week and lasting into early August.

This could bring prolonged, widespread, severe heat across much of the state, potentially breaking heat records and greatly increasing fire danger. Stay tuned.

KILLER WHALES 🫍 IN MONTEREY BAY

A whale watching captain from Sanctuary Cruises in Monterey Bay witnessed a pod of killer whales leaping into the air 10 to 15 times while hunting dolphins 🐬 on Sunday.

The dramatic encounter is part of the orcas’ natural hunting behavior, and the same activity was spotted again Monday. @KTVU

Southern California’s coastal waters continue to warm, with La Jolla in San Diego County reporting a peak water temperature of 77.4°F yesterday.

That is just 3°F below the warmest ocean temperature ever recorded in California’s coastal waters, a record that could be broken this autumn as El Niño continues to strengthen.

As a result of these very warm ocean temperatures, dew points continue to hover near 70°F along parts of the Southern California coastline, creating very humid conditions.

SoCal is really beginning to feel the effects of El Niño.

Coastal water temperatures have reached as high as 76°F near San Diego, with some stations reporting dew points of 70°F or higher, levels considered oppressively humid.

I would not be surprised if ocean temperatures near San Diego hit 80°F by August or September.

A drought emergency has been issued for Colorado.

The headwaters of the Colorado River are in extreme to exceptional drought, the worst category of drought.

It's going to be a brutal summer of water shortages, drought, and extreme heat in the West.

A record-breaking 3.4˚C El Niño is predicted by the new NMME, which is a collection of six different models.

This forecast is 0.3˚C higher than last month, as the underlying models have captured warming that has already occurred and new heat-shifting westerly wind bursts.
