George Onyango was a resilient 43-year-old Kenyan immigrant who moved to the United States to build a brighter future for his family.

Onyango relocated from Kenya to the United States in 2006 after winning a US Diversity Visa (Green Card). He initially settled in Yucaipa, California, seeking professional advancement.

Just a few months after the family relocated to California, his wife, Beatrice, fell severely ill and passed away.

Following his wife's death, Onyango became a widower and a single father. He dedicated most of his time to raising their two young sons, who were 11 and 13 years old.

Long before moving to the United States, Onyango had built a foundation in legal studies in Kenya. While living in California, his ultimate goal was to practice law in the United States, so he spent his daylight hours studying intensely for the California State Bar examination.

To support his two sons and fund his legal dreams, he worked grueling part-time shifts at night as an overnight counselor at a group home for troubled and delinquent youths at the Aiming High Treatment Center in Yucaipa.

The Center was a privately owned group home set up inside a residential three-bedroom house. Complete with a communal kitchen and a living room, it housed five troubled boys who were active probationers.

While two counselors managed the boys together during the day, the facility mandated that only one counselor remain on duty overnight. Onyango worked these night duties entirely by himself.

On the night of August 22, 2009, at around 10:00 PM, Onyango arrived at the Aiming High Treatment Center in Yucaipa to begin his overnight shift.

Before ending their shift, daytime counselors Williams and Brown briefed Onyango on the facility's status. They warned him to be extremely cautious, noting that 16-year-old resident Davion Whitmore was pacing heavily, talking to himself, and exhibiting highly agitated behavior. Williams even warned that the boys might try to run away.

Out of concern for Onyango's safety, Williams stayed 30 minutes past his shift, remaining until 10:30 P.M. Before leaving, he checked that all supply cabinets were locked and confirmed that the residents were in bed, leaving Onyango entirely alone.

At around 11:00 P.M., 17-year-old Carlos Dubose and 16-year-old Davion Whitmore confronted Onyango in the common area and demanded a pass to leave the premises. In accordance with facility protocol, Onyango refused their request because it was unauthorized.

Angered by the refusal, the two teenagers ambushed Onyango. Because he was working the overnight shift entirely alone, no other staff members were present to intervene or call for immediate help.

The boys then broke into a locked closet, grabbing a heavy clothing iron and a wooden rod. They beat Onyango unconscious, inflicting devastating trauma to his head, before tying him up and leaving him helpless on the floor.

After overpowering Onyango, the boys stole his wallet, car keys, and escaped the facility in his vehicle.

A police patrol unit spotted the stolen vehicle fleeing the Yucaipa area. When officers attempted a traffic stop, the teenagers accelerated, triggering a high-speed chase across county roads.

The high-speed pursuit ended abruptly when the teenagers lost control and crashed Onyango's vehicle in the neighboring city of Fontana, California. Police immediately arrested 17-year-old Dubose and 16-year-old Whitmore at the crash scene.

Concurrently with the crash arrest, law enforcement dispatched deputies to check on the Aiming High facility after matching the crashed vehicle to Onyango.

At around 12:30 A.M. on August 22, 2009, emergency rescue teams and San Bernardino County Sheriff's deputies entered the home, discovering Onyango bound and unresponsive on the floor with catastrophic head trauma.
