HK has always been a bridge between China and the West. As the global financial system that has endured since 1971 starts to fracture, HK’s role should turn out to be more important than ever.
I recently published a piece on this very issue with my friend and colleague @RomainMetivet. Asked the Gavekal editors to remove the paywall on this one:

I often feel like a bit of an imposter commenting on Canadian politics as I am not Canadian myself. But I really do love the country, own a bunch of real estate there, have a lot of Canuck friends, and did send my four kids (who do have Canadian passports) to boarding school there… all this as a prelude to my take on the US-Canada trade war, that I fervently hope will be the start of something better for Canada?

@SteveSaretsky Since that day, US long yield shooting up while Canadian going down; + Canadian dollar rising against USD; + Trump now making geriatric attempt to change the name of Lake Ontario (having no other tools left) = likely very good signs!!
@Claudia_Sahm Druck-ism may be a problem; but if claude arranged what he wanted, what is the other problem? (.. hunter hunted with metal tool instead of stone tool?)
@LukeGromen "broaden sanction risk", not "impose sanction" .... Reminds me of sanctions on Chinese refinaries ... and China saying "Let me think... hmmm fuck no" 🤣
@RichardDias_CFA Hahahah... like you are demanding a rape victim "tell me why you walked away"... Canada was sodomised since NAFTA, with big discount on oil etc ($20+ bln./yr); and restrictions... and now the rapist come for more, and more... Canada should not even talk with this admin 🤣
@RichardDias_CFA Show obedience to an extortionist, and they will come back for more and more. Canada does not have to obay, not at least now, at a time when (1) Trump admin is a cat caught in a box by UST market, oil/hormuz, internal approval/midterm and so on, and....
@spomboy Question is are they doing it out of stupidity, or are they doing it because dollar is the only release valve left?.... If they are just opening the release valve .... then gold sails in clear weather..... else gold is still a roller-coster in short/mid run.
@JasonVoorhees_z@ExnerPirot@GeoffKoontz Oh... I didn't even know you were commenting without having any idea about what fraction of exports wll the affected by the 50% tariff; so ... f*** it. 🤣
@JasonVoorhees_z@ExnerPirot@GeoffKoontz Yes! now do a rough arithmatic: take 5% of that number, multiply with 30% (export sector of canada that will lose). then deduct a 5*30% (import sector gain from reciprocal tariffs).... and yes these are all rough estimate.
@USTradeRep Translation: "We have f**ked up so badly in Hormuz that we must use this opportunity to create a distraction until midterm, even though we know that this one will just add to our bond- & oil market f**k up." 🤣
@gsb0824@MarkJCarney So if someone tells you, "I will protect you from possible murder, so let me rape you", you would let them? Besides, the first country to attack Canada, if ever, is USA as of now. (remember '51st state?').
Translation: I have f**ked up so bad at Hormuz that I must have a distraction to survive midterm (even though I know that this one will be another f*** up):
@ExnerPirot Translation: I f***ed up so bad at Hormuz that I must have a distraction to survive midterm (even though I know that this one will be another f*** up):
@JasonVoorhees_z@ExnerPirot@GeoffKoontz Picture this: Covid was supposed to decimate 90% of small business. Trump is supposed to decimate 5% of exporters... meh. All the external & internal problems and enemies Trump has created with tarrifs/war misadventures, will just work in favour of Canada ;)
@JonFlynnREstats@SteveSaretsky The guy who wanted to make Canada 51st state wanted to restrict Canada's global trade ... what are the chances of this being a lie? How easy is to lie when the whole team negotiated, when the US negotiators/reporters are watching?
