Sorry mendacious climate deniers. The #HockeyStick is longer and sharper now, as demonstrated by an independent group of ~80 paleoclimate scientists around the world: https://t.co/XQHw5QUpvD
Earlier this month, a record 15.4°C was recorded at Esperanza Station, more than 20°C above average. During winter, Antarctica should be rebuilding ice, stability, and resilience. Instead, that foundation is weakening.

Petition to stop the LNG import plan at Port Taranaki,
and invest in safe, clean and more reliable renewable energy options instead

The Luxon government plans to gut protections for 5 million hectares of public conservation land - making it easier to sell it off to mining corporations and billionaires.
Make a submission to oppose the sell off now.
Greenpeace has made it super easy👇

LNG import terminal will make NZ energy more expensive, more polluting, less reliable. It is a desperate attempt to lock us into fossil fuels. No wonder they are trying to hide the evidence: Officials redacted advice showing 'low need' for LNG imports https://t.co/1rFVVHnbwy
New Zealand already has a ‘dry year’ solution. A whole network of hydro systems that are essentially giant batteries.
The LAST thing we need to do is spend millions on more expensive LNG fossil gas.
Spend that money on solar and wind to ensure the big hydro batteries never run down, even in a dry year.
The OECD concluded that a NZ LNG import terminal was likely to drive up prices leading to deindustrialisation: “For many internationally‑exposed industries, LNG‑linked energy prices would likely be too high to sustain competitiveness, risking further rapid deindustrialisation.” (p.57)
So, the LNG terminal won't be funded by a levy but the suggestion is still that the power companies (who say LNG isn't needed) will pay? Surely that flows through to electricity prices, just like the levy would - but maybe less politically on the nose.
The NZ government has decided not to tax people's electricity bills to pay for the uneconomic, dangerous, climate-cooking LNG terminal that no one except the fossil gas industry wants ...and now plans to charge electricity gentailers (who will pass on the cost to their customers)
This World Ocean Day, we’re giving the Southern Ocean a voice. 🌊
While Antarctica is distant, what happens there does not stay there. It moves through every current, every coast, every ocean on Earth. 🌎
Protect Antarctica. Protect the Planet. 🇦🇶
This World Environment Day, we're celebrating one of nature's greatest strengths: resilience. The environmental challenges we face are immense, but so is our capacity to create a future where nature thrives. #WorldEnvironmentDay
On #WorldEnvironmentDay, we reaffirm the urgent need for ambitious climate action grounded in science and cooperation.
Across the world, people, ecosystems and species alike are already experiencing the impacts of climate change — but nature also remains one of our greatest allies in building a more resilient future.
At IUCN, we are working with our Members, partners and communities around the globe to advance solutions that protect biodiversity while supporting people and climate resilience.
Nearly 600 environmental rights defenders were killed or disappeared over the past 3 years.
@UNHumanRights chief @volker_turk urges governments to strengthen protections and ensure accountability for abuses.

So I assume the government will now remove the NZTA board?
They’re unelected people making decisions for our transport network including overseeing $32B budget over 3 years.
Also isn’t the Health NZ unelected?
Wait… does ACC board have MPs on it or unelected people? Wait…
El Niño confirmation: @WMO has confirmed the onset of El Niño, warning it could drive hotter temperatures and more extreme weather worldwide. It’s urgent that countries invest in early warning systems to help communities prepare. #Climate#ElNiño
Much like removing treaty obligations from school boards, this change to councils is being introduced late in the legislative process and passed without broad public consultation or targeted Māori consultation.
Why do the government keep doing these things without consultation?
@vlcnz It’s absurd, mining for gold when we have so much above ground sitting in banks, mining for coal in a climate crisis, trying to think that overseas miners are here to make us wealthy, mining toxic metals for weapons - already tech is changing from lithium to sodium batteries
Wetlands are the Earth's most threatened ecosystem in NZ only 10% remain after drainage, fire & clearance. Wetlands are important for biodiversity, water storage, recreational values, carbon storage etc. Central & local Government need to do more to help protect wetlands.
The residents also object to the government’s intention to enact ‘Enabling legislation’ (without any community consultation) which would allow the LNG facility to be built and operational, and a levy put on all electricity users to fund the project, now estimated to cost $2.7 b.
