We are not even asking for much as citizens. We just want good healthcare, reliable public transport, quality education, proper sanitation and the basic services a functioning government should provide.
Just the basics. But somehow, even that seems like too much to ask for.
Same solution the President proposed in opposition. Came to power and failed to follow it. So what solution should we propose now? 😂😭😭😭

I didn’t say it o, our President said it. So why is it that when I demand that the Amansie Central DCE should be sacked and call out NAIMOS operations as performative, you people suddenly excuse it with the argument, “If we don’t catch the small boys, how do we get to the kingpins?” As long as there’s unemployment and poverty the political class funding these operations will always recruit vulnerable people. Arrest both the financiers, DCEs, and kingpins as well as those employed to engage in illegal mining. Until then these raids and arrests are performative #StopGalamseyNow #EndillegalmininginGhana
In April 2025, the Lands Minister (the first picture) announced that MMDCEs whose communities were involved in illegal mining would be sanctioned based on KPIs that were to be set. More than a year later, where are those KPIs? Have they been published, implemented and used to assess MMDCEs? The answer is no. I can list a number of districts and municipalities that illegal mining continues. We need the KPIs set so we can measure the performance in the fight against illegal mining as well as hold DCEs accountable.
This is particularly important when allegations involving local government officials emerge. The DCE for Amansie Central was featured in the Tax for Galamsey exposé in connection with allegations concerning illegal mining. The spokesperson for the ministry on 10th February 2026 claimed that the ministry took note of the allegations and directed an immediate investigation into the conduct of local officials named in the report.
Then on march 2026 the same spokesperson said the investigation was at an “advanced” stage and the outcome was expected to be finalized by the end of the first quarter of 2026.

Under the previous DCE’s tenure this was the state of the forest in the Amansie central. You heavily criticized (rightfully so) the fight against illegal mining in the previous administration yet coming into government under your tenure as lands minister you have allowed a DCE to remain in office despite an exposé with evidence of a system through which illegal mining activities in the Amansie central were allegedly being facilitated and taxed.
The JoyNews “A Tax for Galamsey” investigation reported that miners were being charged fees to operate changfangs and that the DCE acknowledged authorising the printing of stickers connected to the payments. Your Ministry subsequently announced that an investigation had been initiated into the allegations. Up till now NOTHING #StopGalamseyNow
We are experiencing a water crisis. The Kyebi Water Treatment Plant has shut down operations due to the high level of contamination in our water bodies. It draws water from the Birim River, which has been heavily contaminated by illegal mining.

This video and picture was taken last week. This is part of the Tano river at Elubo border, the primary land crossing point between Ghana and Cote D’Ivoire located in the town of Elubo, in western region. Galamsey activities have polluted this river with mercury, cyanide and lead. The Tano is transboundary so whatever happens in Ghana affects Côte D’Ivoire too.
A 2016 study by Asare Donkor and Adimado assessed mercury concentrations in water, sediment and fish from the Tano river basin. The study found mercury levels in water ranging from 0.214 to 0.250 µg/L, sediment levels between 14.43 and 21.51 µg/g, and fish concentrations from 0.068 to 0.413 µg/g. While these levels were within the World Health Organization’s drinking water guidelines they still posed a health threat especially with prolonged exposure.

Despite this MoU illegal mining continues with reports showing persistent mercury cyanide and lead contamination. The Tano river remains a source of drinking water, fishing, and irrigation for communities in both Ghana and Côte D’Ivoire.

Just recently a report from channel one news highlighted that illegal mining, deforestation and the use of harmful chemicals by farmers are severely degrading the Tano basin, according to the water resources commission.
