Late to the party: Congrats on the official translation, Mo Du fandom! Thanks to everyone for your kind words over the years. Exciting life events are filling my time right now, and I've stepped back from danmei fandom generally, so I'm content to see a fresh take on the text.

By coincidence my library hold list disgorged Flights by Olga Tokarczuk and The Exctinction of Irena Rey by Jennifer Croft at the same time. Noteworthy as the author of the latter is also the translator of the former. I was debating which it made sense to read first.

@stranglingstars Yeah, I was thinking as I read it that it probably gets assigned in school and was glad that I was reading it as an adult. Aside from just being massively compelling, a lot of it feels fresh and relevant. That fin de siecle massive technological/societal upheaval vibe.

Ok, don't know why I woke up on the fighty side of the bed today. Anyway. What's everyone been reading? I just finished Hjalmar Söderberg's Doctor Glas (lovely translation by Rochelle Wright) and it was easily ten times more thrilling than I expected.

@fallingasaleaf The issues are censorship and racism, not kids' reading choices. I can completely understand why you're upset about the Italian MDZS translation and the potential for similar issues with future translations. I'm just not sure that's relevant to the larger "right age" discourse.

@fallingasaleaf Oh, okay, that is actually a completely different and separate issue from "why is that middle-schooler reading a grown-up book?!"; and I think we actually agree that a publishing culture that produces results like this is bad.

@fallingasaleaf I don't like current socmed culture either, but I don't think publishers covering their asses by slapping 18+ labels on text is a good outcome, or likely to address the actual problem.

@fallingasaleaf Do books aside from children's books with recommded reading levels marked for pedagocial purposes tend to have ratings where you are? I am not used to that and I don't find it useful or desirable.

Personally I would have been obsessed with Guardian if it'd been around when I was 14. Actual books I was obsessed with at the time include: The Picture of Dorian Gray, Poppy Z. Brite's Drawing Blood, Hesse's Narcissus and Goldmund. Fits right in.

Hard agree. The "right age" discourse is bewildering. On an individual level sure there are books you get more out of it you read then with the benefit of more life experience, but I do not understand or endorse the view that you have to be a certain age to read certain books.

I don't think I'm ever going to agree w most of danmeitwt about the "right age" for complex topics tho... imo kids should have a balanced reading diet so they learn to think for themselves. ppl don't magically develop critical thinking skills & well-reasoned opinions at 16/18/21
