Since there will be no Least Tern fledglings from the Seal Beach Refuge this year, here are some Forester's terns so you don't go into baby-bird withdrawal. The 1 on the left was begging for food from his parents.
With no activity for weeks after the Least Tern colony was wiped out by a Raven at Seal Beach Refuge, we have reason to hope - a pair on the ground "prospecting" or scraping the sand, possibly getting ready to nest? Finger crossed. photo: tern decoy
Here is the murderous Raven that has wiped out the Least Tern Colony at Seal Beach Refuge this year. He was on the ground poking around looking for something, while we were inside looking for eggs.
The Least Tern monitors at Seal Beach Refuge are in mourning. Our entire Colony has been wiped out. No nests. No eggs. Will the 6 terns left flying over try again?
Today's Least Tern count at the Refuge was devastating. We lost 51 of our 52 nests. We only have 6 adults left. BUT, there was 1 new nest with 1 egg and the 6 are still hanging in there. Suspected Murderer: Raven.
Least tern just landed on her nest after we finished walking her row at the Seal Beach Refuge. Trail camera set up on our 1st 3-egg nest. We're up to 52 nests now!
Least tern monitoring called off for this morning, so here's a photo of a Black-necked Stilt mama with her 2 chicks. Mama has her back to us. Chick on right side is close to her - other far left side.

We have eggs! 11 adult Least Terns seen, 6 nests & 7 eggs on our 1st count of the 2019 season at Seal Beach Refuge. Here is egg #1, along with a scrape, AKA: a LT nest.
The California Least Terns arrived at Seal Beach NWR today. 3 were fishing in 7th St. Pond. This is a terrible photo, but the only one I got. But here's an added bonus photo near & dear to my heart. cv
