This map we made at The Common Initiative reveals what Climate Week in New York overlooked: the world’s most critical climate tipping points directly overlap with key Indigenous territories, including areas with nomadic and semi-nomadic Indigenous communities.
Indigenous peoples manage about 25% of Earth's land surface and 37% of remaining natural areas, storing 33% of carbon in intact forests. Yet their governance systems remain marginalized in climate discussions.
As #NYCW closes today, one question haunts me: whose voices were diminished?
Key Indigenous federations from the Amazon, the Andes, Central America, Central and North, Central and Southern Africa, the Arctic, the Caribbean, South/South East Asia and Pacific sent drastically smaller delegations than in previous years. Not by choice. Travel and visa restrictions, funding constraints, and institutional preferences for symbolic participation over real governance limited their presence.
The paradox is stark: Climate Week elevates new pledges while sidelining those already governing planetary resilience frontlines.
Indigenous federations aren't stakeholders, they're proven stewards. Indigenous-managed territories have lower deforestation rates and better biodiversity outcomes than state-protected areas. They're already delivering climate solutions while formal climate governance ignores them.
This isn't about justice; it's about effectiveness. The territories with the best conservation track records remain marginalized in climate policy. Sidelining proven stewards misallocates resources at the most strategic level.
If territories with the best conservation outcomes depend on Indigenous stewardship, why aren't their federations empowered as central decision-makers at #UNGA and #ClimateWeek?
To bend the curve on climate, the answer isn't another "initiative". It's transferring real decision-making power to federations whose stewardship aligns with Earth system survival.
Will next year finally empower Indigenous federations as climate decision-makers, or will we keep mistaking consultation for governance?
The voices missing this week are precisely those we cannot afford to leave out.
