Have long believed these expectancy effects are a major factor driving the gap in mental health between left and right. Are we first members of our respective identity groups, and destined for whatever outcomes the world deigns appropriate, or are we individuals? A society that fixates on an unfair world, without a countervailing narrative of agency and hope, can encourage a psychologically harmful external locus of control.

Discrimination/bias obviously exist, and need to be called out; BUT to orient society exclusively around telling those stories establishes the wrong base rates assumptions, reduces our humanity and reliably harms those it purports to help. A tragedy.

If you tell people (especially young women) they have some odd physical difference, even if that difference is imaginary, they will report being negatively judged for that difference.
