During the launch of his candidature, Rt. Hon. Raila Odinga gave one of his best speeches in recent times. A speech that captured his deep understanding of our continent, and his vision which entails key interventions needed in different sectors from infrastructure development, trade, climate action, harnesing of natural resources and silencing the guns.

I was eagerly waiting to get the written copy of the speech as I wanted to highlight and make posts from parts of it. The copy was sent to me as soon as he finished the address. To my amazement, the aspects that resonated most with us, the ones that got each listener excited and pumped up re-imagining the African dream were not in his written speech. Those are things he spoke from his heart.

Baba has the ability to communicate the most complex and grand ideas in the most simple and relatable ways. Let’s take the story of the lion for example. It reminded us who we are as a people, what we aspire to be, the natural wealth our continent is endowed with and what we can achieve if we overcame the drawbacks that divide us, and work together.

Besides the story of the lion, I also wanted to highlight the Flagship Projects under the AU Agenda 2063 and the Trans-African Highways which he had mentioned. Again, I noticed these were not in the speech. He knows the projects offhead and the status of each.

Yesterday I sat with him and as we analysed his speech, I asked him why the Yamoussoukro Decision on the liberalization of air transport services between African countries had taken so long to actualize, 25 years later. He shared some of the challenges and went ahead to explain in detail the interventions that he will lead once elected, to remove various bottlenecks that have hindered the open skies policy as well as free movement of persons, services and goods across the continent.

Over the last 10 years I have interacted with various leaders from across the continent. But barely have I heard or experienced the kind of clarity that Raila Odinga elucidates the different range of issues that are affecting the continent, and the steps that need to be taken to resolve each one of them.

This reminds me of what one of my friends from one of the EAC countries told me after meeting Raila in Zanzibar a few weeks ago. He was not sure about his candidature but by the time Raila finished presenting his agenda, my friend and his colleagues were totally amazed and sold out.

As I have said before, Raila is the man for the job and now more than ever I am totally convinced. Not to undermine the other candidates, but non has exhibited an understanding of the complexity of issues like he has, or clarity on how the continental institutions need to be developed and their profile raised in order to deliver on our aspirations.

The African Union Commission (AUC) needs Baba to restore it to its place in the global arena.
