As I am officially The Gift of Chess Ambassador to Benin 🇧🇯, I am mindful of the huge task that lies ahead of me.
Among other impacts to achieve through the 1.000 chess sets is to use the game to reclaim orphans and out-of-school children and teenagers from committing suicide, from despair, from becoming recruits of terrorist groups.
I know how they feel deep in their bones. I went though their conditions when I lost both parents at 14 and turned to the streets, spending nights under bridges, on market shelves, exposed to all risks and diseases in the Abidjan-Lagos Corridor where we would work on construction sites and in sawmills. No parents or adult around to ask you how you feel when you are silent. No one to see the internal tears you shed. No one know our intimate and daily struggles.
Thousands have committed suicide because they are not mentally strong enough. Millions are out there, in our streets, about to commit suicide.
We can prevent this.
The 1,000 chess sets come as the righteous tools in my hands and in the hands of everyone who will join the project so that we use the unique power of the game as a recreational therapy to help target audiences develop their ability to manage negative emotions that come with their failures and disappointments, especially when negative emotions interfere with their daily functions; all of this sharing with them my personal experiences about how I overcome the struggles to be for instance the first person under 25 in Benin Republic selected by the US Department of States for the International Visitors Leadership Programme (IVLP) in 2011.
Our activities with chess as a non-threatening game will have a positive influence not only on problem-solving, concentration, cognitive skills but also on socio-emotional enrichment of children, adolescents, youth and adults.
I have to do an internship with @chessinslums in Nigeria, next to me so to learn more from their best practices, lessons learned and experiences in using chess to build Kings and Queens in the most unlikely places.
Thank you all @OLUSEGUNCHARLE8
