@PizzaExpress@Coeliac_UK thank you, I have done this and hope to receive reassurance that the appropriate safety measures are in place at every branch and that staff are trained accordingly, no matter the size of the kitchen or the business of the restaurant.
Coeliac disease is an autoimmune condition where the body's immune system attacks its own tissues when gluten is consumed.
Managing coeliac disease involves a strict gluten free diet. Gluten is a protein found in wheat, barley and rye and is a regular ingredient in common staple foods such as bread and pasta, but can also be found in many other foods, drinks and sauces.
For someone with coeliac disease ongoing consumption of gluten will prevent the gut from healing and over time can lead to serious complications such as osteoporosis, anaemia, infertility and in rare cases small bowel lymphoma.
Particular care needs to be taken when gluten containing food is present, as even trace amounts of gluten from cross contamination can cause symptoms. However regardless of the severity of symptoms, in fact some people don’t experience symptoms at all, managing coeliac disease requires a strict gluten free diet to avoid continued damage to the gut.
That’s why preventing cross contamination is crucial. Our tips above provide guidance on keeping your gluten free food safe.

@thismorning - words cannot express my anger and disappointment regarding how Coeliac Disease was handled in a segment of your show. Misinformation is one thing, but to confidently give “advice” on something you are clearly uneducated about, dismissing the severity is another.
Today on ITV's @thismorning , coeliac disease was discussed during a phone in segment on the show. We are deeply concerned about the content and advice given to a caller attending a Christmas family event where all of the food will be gluten free to protect the health of a person with coeliac disease. We are actively following up with @ITV . You can read our open letter in the comments below, and will share any responses we receive.
In the meantime we ask you to contact This Morning to ask them to give an apology to our gluten free community on air for this damaging and inaccurate information, and to engage with Coeliac UK to ensure their information is accurate in future.
@BritishBakeOff please do a gluten free week next season or at least a gluten free challenge because making anything gf IS a challenge 🙏🏻 #glutenfree#freefrom
@SundayBrunchC4 PLEASE get @beckyexcell on to talk about gluten free/coeliac/free from food and do some gluten free cooking!! Would be amazing to see more awareness raised in mainstream media since it’s fairly overlooked and hardly ever addressed on TV/cooking shows 🙏🏻🫶🏻👩🍳
@beckyexcell@AllergyShow I’d like to see mainstream brands like @CostaCoffee (and the like) taking an interest and making some changes so that Gluten Free on the go can finally be more than just a bag of crisps or a salad. #makeglutenfreemainstream!
