🧬 Scientists Found Something Unexpected in the Blood of Long COVID Patients
For years, people suffering from long COVID have reported fatigue, brain fog, and breathing problems yet doctors had no clear test to confirm what was happening inside the body. Now researchers may have discovered an important clue.
In a study published in Infection, scientists analyzed blood samples from long COVID patients and found fragments of the virus SARS-CoV-2 hidden inside tiny particles called extracellular vesicles.
These microscopic “packages” move through the bloodstream carrying molecules between cells. But in this case, scientists found dozens of pieces of viral proteins inside them including fragments from a protein the virus uses to replicate.
Because this protein does not exist in human cells, researchers say it strongly suggests that traces of the virus may still remain in the body long after infection

Long COVID: The Nervous System
Long COVID can affect the nervous system. Autonomic dysfunction is a core and often disabling feature of Long COVID. The autonomic nervous system regulates automatic functions such as heart rate, blood pressure, circulation, digestion, temperature control, and bladder and bowel function. When disrupted, it can cause orthostatic intolerance, syncope, instability in heart rate and blood pressure, gastrointestinal and bladder dysfunction, and severe exercise intolerance. In some patients, reduced cerebral blood flow may contribute to cognitive impairment and migraines. Long COVID also affects both the central and peripheral nervous systems. Individuals may experience cognitive impairment, slowed processing speed, memory disruption, persistent headaches, vertigo, sensory disturbances, photophobia and phonophobia, sleep disruption, paresthesia or neuropathy, and changes in coordination or strength. Some develop difficulty with balance, walking, or other neurologically regulated movements. These neurologic effects are biologically mediated and can significantly impair mobility, independence, employment, and overall quality of life.
