SONG OF MYSELF V
I mind how we lay in June, such a transparent summer morning;
You settled your head athwart my hips and gently turn'd over upon me,
And parted the shirt from my bosom-bone, and plunged your tongue to my bare-stript heart,
And reached till you felt my beard, and reached till you held my feet.

Caravaggio
(Italian, 1571-1610)
The Incredulity of Saint Thomas
c. 1601
Oil on canvas
107 x 146.1 cm
"The Incredulity of Saint Thomas" by Caravaggio is a compelling portrayal of a biblical scene where the Apostle Thomas confronts his doubts about Jesus's resurrection. In this oil on canvas painting, four men are depicted in a closely knit group. Jesus stands to the left, partially draped in a white cloth that exposes the wound in his side. Thomas, positioned at the center, leans in with intense focus, his hand probing Jesus's side to verify the resurrection. Two other apostles observe the interaction with expressions that convey a mix of curiosity and burgeoning belief. Caravaggio’s masterful use of chiaroscuro—dramatic contrasts between light and shadow—illuminates the figures against a dark background, highlighting their expressions and the tactile nature of the scene.
The composition is intimate and tense, capturing the moment of revelation and belief as Thomas's skepticism is transformed into faith. The emotions on the apostles' faces reflect a journey from doubt to realization, encapsulating the painting's core theme. Caravaggio’s work is emblematic of the Baroque art movement, characterized by its dramatic realism and emotional intensity. His ability to convey profound human emotions and spiritual themes through realistic portrayal and effective lighting makes this painting a timeless masterpiece.

Agrarian Leader Zapata
1931
Mural
The Museum of Modern Art, New York
Diego Rivera's "Agrarian Leader Zapata" (1931), a mural housed at The Museum of Modern Art in New York, depicts Emiliano Zapata, a prominent figure in the Mexican Revolution, leading a group of peasant rebels armed with improvised weapons. Standing beside the fallen body of a hacienda owner, Zapata holds the bridle of a majestic white horse, symbolizing triumph. Despite media portrayals of Zapata as a villain, Rivera portrays him as a hero, celebrating the Revolution's triumph through a scene of justified vengeance.

John Nash
(British, 1893–1977)
The Moat
Grange Farm, Kimble
1922
Oil on canvas
76.2 x 50.8 cm.
In this brooding landscape the trees and their tendril-like branches threaten to invade the viewer's space. The dark colours and evening light give the painting a claustrophobic atmosphere. Like his brother Paul, John Nash had served with the Artists' Rifles for two years before becoming an Official War Artist in 1918. This painting, completed soon after the war, is characterised by a sense of bleak desolation that suggests the profound introspection that for many followed the devastation of the war.

Roy Lichtenstein’s bold 1964 work ‘Girl in Mirror,’ will soon head to #SothebysNewYork. It’s a quintessential example of the artist’s legendary blonde heroines and stars in the Contemporary Day Auction on 15 May.
‘Girl in Mirror’ is made of porcelain enamel on steel and showcases Lichtenstein’s signature Benday dots. The blonde protagonist holds up a mirror, and we only see her face through this reflection. The mirror motif appears throughout art history, and Lichtenstein uses it here to alter our perception, giving the painting an unsettling sense of illusion.
‘Girl in Mirror’ will be the highest-valued work placed in a day sale at Sotheby’s. See this masterpiece as part of The New York Sales exhibition opening 2 May. Learn more: https://t.co/sABJQteVMk

On Willem de Kooning’s birthday, we’re taking a closer look at the monumental ‘Untitled III.’ It’s a gem from the artist’s most coveted periods of production, the mid 1970s, and is a highlight of The Now and Contemporary Evening Auction at #SothebysNewYork.
By the time de Kooning painted ‘Untitled III’ in 1975, he had permanently moved from the city to his beloved country home in Springs, East Hampton. Now fully immersed in nature, he developed a new routine of biking, fishing, and swimming, and it’s in this environment that he produced some of his greatest paintings to date. With its gestural strokes of rich vermilions, steel blues, and saffron yellows, ‘Untitled III’ captures the spirit of renewal and unbridled vitality of this seminal period in de Kooning’s career.
