Since I was 18 I’ve always wanted a power bike so bad. But later on in life, I checked myself and remembered I’m an adrenaline junkie and na Nigeria I dey. If I buy am, na me go sign my own death warrant.

On Friday, on my way to a meeting on the Island, somewhere after Airport Road heading towards Oshodi, I witnessed something that has stayed with me. A bike rider had been knocked down and had died on the spot, and instead of people calling emergency services or trying to help, almost everyone there had their phones out, cameras rolling, recording.

Nobody was checking on him, nobody was trying to offer help, nobody was attempting to do anything meaningful, people were just standing there filming a human being lying lifeless on the road.

And it made me ask myself, is this mobile phone really a blessing or is it slowly becoming a curse? When did recording become more important than responding? When did capturing a moment become more important than showing basic human concern?

Why are people so comfortable recording other people’s worst moments? Why is the first instinct now to pull out a phone instead of offering help? Why does everyone want to be the one to share the news, the video, the scene?

If similar incidents happen multiple times in a day, in different places, what exactly are we doing with all these videos of accidents, blood, and death on our phones? How is that normal?

It disturbed me deeply, not just the accident itself, but the reaction of the people there. I don’t fully know where this thought is headed, I just know that something is wrong when human suffering becomes content.

Maybe what I'm trying to say is that we shouldn't let empathy be this costly. We can each teach our family members and community how to react when they're faced with such situations - we owe it to ourselves to help each other.
