I used to have a large "WALTU? WTFAU?" sign pinned above my desk as a reminder to consider those for every possible entry! Questions often posed by (originating with?) Ann Hudson in her training guidance to @indexers
How do indexers decide what to include? For every paragraph, we’re asking: would anyone look this concept up? And if they did, would they find anything useful? We use subject knowledge, indexing skills and empathy with the reader to judge what should be included #IndexDay
You’ll often hear that authors are the best indexers of their own work. Some authors make good indexers. Others lack indexing skills and are too close to the work. Plus it's time they could spend on other projects. Read our guidance for authors at https://t.co/Fs2wCR6Jd0
Another myth is that every mention of a word should be in the index. That’s a concordance, not an index. We select terms based on significance and relevance to the reader, bearing in mind the space available. We sift out minor mentions and focus on the most important #IndexDay
So do indexers really read all of the book? Yes, often several times. Reading for indexing requires deep focus to identify the key concepts and important details of a book. We start at the beginning and work through the book, building the index as we go #IndexDay
Indexers often get told ‘I didn’t know that was a job’. It is! Indexing societies around the world support freelancers working for publishers and authors. Read more about indexing as a career #IndexDay https://t.co/efh16JmPGI
Once you’ve learned that indexing is a job, you might wonder how people become one. Our training course that will take you from absolute beginner to professional accreditation. Find out more about the process of learning to index #IndexDay https://t.co/CS7VfHr9Uk
