I wrote this thread in 2020 - six years ago(!). ChatGPT didn’t exist. Claude didn’t exist. “Data centers in space” definitely didn’t exist. My, how the world has changed.
Today the world changed forever.
Why? Because a group of Artificial Intelligence researchers released something called "GPT-3".

i notice some interview candidates at @neuralink roll their eyes at the massive scale we’re pursuing.
when i started at @SpaceX in 2016, our goal was to enable a launch every other day.
this was insane to me.
we had completed less than 30 successful launches in 14 years, and here i was, designing hardware to save 3 hours from mating the rocket to the launchpad. I couldn’t even fathom there being demand for 100s of launches a year (mind you, this is before the first starlink prototypes were ever completed).
now a decade later, that launch cadence has silently come to fruition, and the product market fit is so lucidly evident.
it guided me to this fundamental realization: don’t get hung up on applications. relentlessly develop the enabling technology, and the applications will become apparent. or as rumi said, “place your step, and the way will show itself”
doing 10,000 surgeries a year is such a foregone conclusion to me. we will just obviously achieve this, as long as we continue to hire exceptional talent.
we know the guiding vector: decode more bits.
we know the steps we must take now: increase channel count, signal to noise ratio, percent of neurons accessed.
i’m more curious about what ‘way’ will show itself, what applications will arise that enable us to reach millions.
would we have dreamed of facetime and spotify and netflix and apple pay when the internet was developed? no- the job was just to build the best internet by making progress in a few key vectors (bandwidth, latency, service area).
like the internet,
like the space age,
we’re at the dawn of a new era.

Fascinating experience using the latest driverless @Waymo cars via the @Uber app in Austin, TX.
A few observations:
1. Unbelievably easy. As simple as ordering an ordinary Uber.
2. Feels totally safe. Swiss Re’s analysis suggests they’re statistically safer than human drivers, but what earns passenger trust is the smooth braking, early signalling, etc.
3. Surprisingly bold! Rapid acceleration when necessary, willing to assert itself at junctions etc. (seemingly a big upgrade vs. earlier versions).
4. Big ‘wow factor’ at first, but becomes routine pretty quickly. In Downtown I’d guess 1 in 40 cars(?) is a Waymo - locals already see them as second nature.
5. Great fun (as you can tell from my chimp-like yells of excitement).
Widespread autonomy is now a matter of when, not if. European regulators, policymakers, and indeed insurers would do well to pay close attention to the pace of change in the US - the shift from R&D to real-world use is truly underway.
The most important metric for any economy will soon become ‘number of humanoid robots in operation’. This number will determine factory output, energy costs, inflation, and quality of life. Everything will exist downstream of this number. Not discussed enough IMO.
I was talking to chatGPT about Ancient Rome and it started playing instrumental music. Can anyone at @OpenAI (or elsewhere) explain what’s happening here?
