The UK government officially concluded that Israel’s continued occupation of Palestinian territory is unlawful. It also announced plans to ban imports from illegal Israeli settlements, prohibit the promotion of property in those settlements, expand sanctions against individuals and companies that facilitate or profit from settlement activity, and sanction additional extremist settlers accused of supporting or inciting violence against Palestinians. Britain also said it will refuse licences for exports that materially contribute to the occupation.

This is not merely a statement of concern. It is a recognition that occupation, settlement expansion and violence against Palestinians must have consequences.

For decades, Palestinians have been asking the international community for something very simple: apply international law equally.

Today’s decision does not undo the suffering, restore stolen land, or bring back the lives that have been lost. But accountability has to begin somewhere.

And when governments finally move from words to action, it matters.

Palestinians do not need exceptions to international law. We need international law to apply to us too.

May this be one step toward justice, accountability, and a free Palestine. 🇵🇸
