But, the reality of wealth building is boring, it's one lousy step at a time over a long period of time, if the investment attracts so much hype and excitement, it may not be it. The most valuable asset to most people is their job. It may not pay well but respect it because it's easier to find another when you already have one. The holder of the same asset shouldn't make you lose yours, simply because you don't like them.
Things are thick on the streets if you get there unprepared.

While at Cambridge some years ago, I met Ugandans who were studying there - genetics, crop science, development studies, education, etc… I have kept contact with many of them. Some are in Uganda. Some returned after their studies but later left to other countries. Some never returned. The last two categories, were especially those who had solicited their own funding. On return, many struggled to fit in. Others felt that their expertise could not shine in institutional cultures of mediocrity. They were frustrated by mediocres - who tend to be the majority.

When a country adopts mediocrity, everyone is put at risk. Technical people (if employed) are supervised by clueless powerful relatives and friends of some above who ultimately determine what gets to be done or not. Scholarships at big universities that would have facilitated the best brains to think and innovate for the country end up being taken by their average relatives and friends - who return to mess things. Even when the cream succeed at getting scholarships on their own, they hardly find opportunity to shine - as the connected mediocre take first priority.

I have taught many students who only returned to university for papers (sometimes a BA) but were already occupying big offices. In class you would at times listen to the quality of their submissions and only wonder where such brains can take the country, yet they’re in charge! They are running things, with untold arrogance!

Countries that care where they want to go are very deliberate in selecting talent and utilising it. It is ideas that move and change the world - and that is our key deficit. Yet even the few good ideas are messed by the mediocres in offices. I imagine that if the first visit to the moon were to be in Uganda, certain people would still have insisted on fixing in their relative. A combination of putting clueless people in critical positions plus our breakdown in integrity is just but a sure way to national decay. Third world cancer - people who not only lack progressive ideas but they are also thieves.
